Description

The black gold of the mountains

Mumijo or shilajit, also known as “mountain tears”, occurs on rock faces in the Himalayas and other mountain systems. However, it is not rock powder, no, the origin of this extraordinary substance lies in the remains of primeval plants and microorganisms – admittedly, the origin and development are still somewhat mysterious today, but shilajit is nevertheless very well known in naturopathy. And it has had quite a long time to become known: Plant residues, resins and lichens undergo a transformation under the influence of heat, pressure and biological processes and geological conditions to form the characteristic humic acids found in shilajit. The entire process takes place over thousands of years and is so complex that the exact composition of shilajit can vary depending on the source and region – normal for a natural product! Nevertheless, shilajit is always characterized by a high concentration of mineral components and bioactive substances

Versatile applications for health and well-being

Mumijo impresses with its wide range of applications, which extends to numerous areas of health:

  • Gastrointestinal tract: Supports healthy digestion and intestinal flora.
  • Immune system: Strengthens the body’s own defenses.
  • Bones: Promotes bone health and supports the maintenance of stable bone structures.
  • Fertility: Can have a positive effect on fertility in men and women.
  • Brain: Has a supportive effect on cognitive functions and memory.

Chemical composition

Shilajit contains more than 80 different minerals and trace elements, including iron, zinc, magnesium, copper, manganese, silicon, calcium and many others. These minerals are present in an ionic form that can be absorbed particularly well by the body. Another outstanding feature of shilajit are the humic acids, especially fulvic acids, which are not only responsible for the binding capacity, but also have a high bioavailability. They help to ensure that the nutrients contained in shilajit can be absorbed more efficiently by the body.

Fulvic acids are another important component of shilajit. These substances are organic compounds that play an important role in nutrient transport and soil fertility in nature. Fulvic acids are known to dissolve minerals from the soil and convert them into a form that is more readily available to plants and animals. In shilajit, they contribute to better absorption of the minerals contained in the body.

Shilajit in Ayurveda

In Ayurveda, the traditional Indian art of healing, shilajit has been considered an important rasayana for centuries – a term that describes remedies that are intended to increase general well-being, slow down the ageing process and prolong life. Shilajit is classified as an adaptogen, which means that it is said to help the body adapt better to stress and physical strain.

In addition to its use as a general tonic to promote vitality, shilajit is also used in Ayurveda to support digestion, detoxification and sexual health. It is believed to help the body absorb nutrients and thus improve general well-being.

The role of shilajit in the body

The key property of shilajit is its ability to provide minerals and trace elements in a highly bioavailable form. This means that the body can absorb these nutrients quickly and efficiently, which is particularly important for metabolism and energy production.

Shilajit also has the ability to bind toxins and other harmful substances. To a certain extent, it is known for this. It is believed that the humic acids, which shilajit contains in high quantities, can bind heavy metals, pesticides, organic chemicals such as flame retardants and insecticides as well as toxic metabolites. This binding means that these substances are excreted from the body without damaging the body’s cells.

Pollutants are bound by two mechanisms: complex formation and ion exchange. These processes are particularly efficient as humic acids have a high affinity for toxic substances. This makes shilajit an interesting topic in research into detoxification and regeneration of the body.

Effect on the digestive tract

Shilajit shows promising results in relation to the digestive tract. In animal studies, it has been observed that the humic acids in shilajit can support the regeneration of the intestinal mucosa by forming a protective film on the cells of the intestinal mucosa. This film could prevent harmful microorganisms or toxins from damaging the sensitive intestinal mucosa. It also stimulates the production of the so-called goblet cells in the intestine, which produce mucus that protects the intestinal mucosa.

Some studies show that shilajit could help in the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases such as colitis or irritable bowel syndrome. There is also evidence that shilajit could reduce the growth of pro-inflammatory bacteria in the gut and at the same time promote the growth of beneficial microorganisms. Pretty practical, isn’t it?

Immune system and antioxidant properties

The antioxidants in shilajit are another important aspect of its potential effect. Shilajit contains several natural antioxidants that can neutralize free radicals and thus protect cells from oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is one of the main causes of cell damage and contributes to the development of many chronic diseases.

In addition, shilajit is used in traditional medicine as a means of supporting the immune system. It is believed to strengthen the body’s ability to fight infections and pathogenic microorganisms. This may be partly due to shilajit’s binding effect against toxins and pathogens such as bacteria, viruses and fungi.
