Description

Sustainability and nature conservation

You may not have known it, but honey is a critical product. By buying regular honey from a discount store – even if it is organic – you may be supporting animal suffering and environmental destruction. A simple test: look at the countries of origin of the honey, sometimes there are five or more. Clear red flag! When buying honey, you have to look out for certain quality features, because a lot can go wrong during production. From pesticides and artificial fertilizers to the mistreatment of bees and the destruction of the quality of honey through poor processing.

What makes Bioland different

The Bioland seal is a seal of quality with which beekeepers can distinguish themselves if they meet certain criteria. Bioland beekeepers do not use the aforementioned synthetic chemical pesticides and artificial fertilizers in the beekeeping areas. Bee-friendliness must also be guaranteed. Bees collect nectar and pollen in a clean, biodiverse environment, which naturally also improves the quality of the honey. The bees are not given sugar substitutes, but beekeepers leave the bees some of their own honey as a natural food source. In winter, the bees’ natural food should not be replaced, but the bees should be allowed to feed on their own honey.

It is absolutely not permitted to kill bees simply to save costs or maximize the honey harvest. The aim of organic beekeeping is not only sustainable, but also respectful towards bees. The decision to kill bees would violate the principles of animal welfare and bee care enshrined in the Bioland guidelines. Unfortunately, this is normal practice for many honey producers.

Raw food quality

There are a few things to bear in mind during processing. The honey is extracted from the combs at low temperatures in order to preserve the raw food quality. It is then gently filtered without the use of heat or fine filters in order to preserve valuable enzymes, pollen, vitamins and minerals. Some of the honey remains as a natural food source for the bees instead of being replaced by sugar water.

Honey is a natural product, so the variety of flavors varies depending on the jar – from mild and flowery to strong and spicy.
