Description

The tobacco plant on the early American continents

The tobacco plant was used in a variety of ways across both continents, South and North America: It was chewed, snuffed, smoked, eaten, juiced, rubbed on the body, used in eye drops and body wraps. Depending on the area and culture, its use varied from medicinal purposes to pure enjoyment and spirituality. For some cultures, tobacco was and still is regarded as a connection to the spiritual world: tobacco smoke was blown over the fields before sowing, spread over women before sexual intercourse or blown into the faces of men on their way to battle, and tobacco smoke was also used as an offering to the gods. It was believed that tobacco smoke had a blessing, protective and, above all, purifying effect. The popularity of the tobacco plant also lies in its dual effect: taken in small doses, tobacco has a mildly stimulating effect, while large quantities can lead to hallucinations, deep trance and even death. This hallucinogenic effect is also one reason why tobacco plays such an important role in so many shamanic traditions and has become an integral part of their cultures. Even today, tobacco is still used by many shamans in the Amazon in their rituals. These shamans even proudly include tobacco in their names: Tabaquieros. They have captured the “spirit” of tobacco and can supposedly cure illnesses with tobacco smoke. For them, tobacco is a planta maestra, a so-called teacher plant. It allows the shamans to enter the spiritual world and guides and protects them. Other teacher plants include ayuhuasca, the coca plant and San Pedro. There are dozens more and not all of them have hallucinogenic ingredients.
Tobacco was also widespread across all tribes and cultures in North America before Columbus arrived. What they all had in common was that they all used pipes for smoking. The pipes were not only used for social purposes when sitting together, they also had a ritual character – so much so that tobacco and pipes were regarded as sacred.
Many tribes used tobacco for medicinal purposes and to fight disease:

  • Earache
  • Snake bites
  • Cuts and burns
  • Respiratory diseases
  • Fever
  • Nervous disorders
  • Bladder problems
  • Skin diseases

But the pipe was also a fundamental instrument for the Native Americans to seal peace with hostile tribes or to make contact with the gods and pray for good harvests and protection from storms.

Today

…tobacco is a commercial agricultural product that is grown in over 100 countries.
The entire process, from sowing to harvesting, drying and further processing, is closely monitored.
Special requirements must be met, for example for the tobacco leaves, flammability, the smoke produced, the moisture content and many more.

Alongside alcohol, tobacco products are one of the two largest categories of stimulants for which the ingredients do not have to be explicitly listed – and this is one of the reasons why tobacco products are full of additives. Every attempt to find a regulation in which these ingredients would be listed has been successfully prevented by the tobacco industry to this day. And if you talk about “numerous additives” in relation to tobacco products, then that’s still pretty low. A closer look reveals how many additives are actually added. In the United States, the tobacco industry mixes over 600 chemical additives into cigarette blends. In addition, there are hundreds more additives that are created during the harvesting and manufacturing process and are not intentionally added.
These include, among others:

  • Various microorganisms
  • Pesticides
  • Herbicides
  • Insecticides
  • Heavy metals
  • Traces of foreign materials such as metal, cardboard, polystyrene, wood particles, small animals and insects
  • Solvent
  • Dioxins

    The tobacco plant

The tobacco industry claims that all additives found in cigarettes and other tobacco products have been found to be “generally safe” by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, the problem is that these products may be generally safe in their original state, but not when burned or inhaled. Through inhalation, our bodies can also absorb substances that, if taken orally, would otherwise be recognized as toxic by the digestive system and “eliminated”.

Burning these additives can quickly make these otherwise harmless substances harmful, and some are even known to have a carcinogenic effect when burned. In addition, the interaction between the combustion of various additives has not really been investigated to date. To give a simple example: Even harmless additives such as licorice, chocolate, honey or brown sugar are harmful if they are burned together with nicotine. Why?

Carcinogenic acetaldeytes are formed during combustion.
Another example is glycerol, which turns into acrolein during combustion, which is known to be carcinogenic.

And as if that wasn’t enough, in 1982 the tobacco plant was the first plant ever to be genetically manipulated. Since then, the plant has been modified in many ways: It was to become more resistant to herbicides and insecticides, to fungi and viruses and the nicotine content was influenced. And since genetic manipulation is not required to be clearly labeled on the packaging, consumers do not know what additives are in the tobacco, they do not even know whether the tobacco has been genetically manipulated.

If you think further, this also means that all studies carried out on smoking do not differentiate between natural and manipulated tobacco.
