Description
“The sleep-inducing scientist” – or the sleeping berry
Ashwagandha, also known as “winter cherry” or “sleep berry” or derived from its botanical name Withania somnifera, which means “the sleep-bringing scientist”, has been an integral part of Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years. It is traditionally used to alleviate stress, anxiety and sleep disorders and to strengthen the immune system. However, Ashwaganda does not act like a sleeping pill, but rather indirectly: through healthy hormone release and regulation of the nervous system, sleep should become more restful and deeper. Ashwagandha makes it easier to reach the particularly relaxing deep sleep phases, which also helps the body to regenerate better.
Rich in bioactive substances such as alkaloids, saponins and withanolides, ashwagandha also has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and immune-regulating properties
Liposomal technology: cutting-edge science meets Ayurveda
We rely on high-quality ingredients and state-of-the-art technology.
Up to 140x higher bioavailability – for a faster and more effective effect.
Targeted cell uptake – active ingredients reach the cells intact.
Longer duration of action – liposomes protect against premature degradation.
Doctor Raw thus offers one of the highest doses of ashwagandha supplements in the world.
Ashwagandha in Ayurveda
In Ayurveda, ashwagandha is valued as an important rasayana – a remedy to promote vitality and longevity. According to Ayurvedic teachings, rasayanas are said to strengthen the tissues, support the immune system and promote stamina and physical strength. They are also said to promote the formation of ojas – the finest body matter, which is connected to the life force prana.
While these concepts are traditionally based on observation, modern scientific research shows that ashwagandha has antioxidant properties and can contribute to cell protection. This builds a bridge between traditional knowledge and current research findings.
The benefits of liposomal ashwagandha at a glance
Stress reduction & cortisol lowering
A study from 2012 investigated the effects of an ashwagandha root extract on the perception of stress. To this end, 64 participants took 300 mg of the extract twice a day over a period of two months. A control group received a placebo.
At the end of the study period, it was found that the participants who had received ashwagandha had a 30% lower cortisol level compared to the placebo group. They also reported a 64% reduction in subjective feelings of stress. Complaints such as insomnia and anxiety also occurred 70% less frequently in these participants.
In another comparative study, the ashwagandha group achieved similar or better results than a placebo group that also received psychotherapeutic support. Further studies showed parallels between the effects of ashwagandha and common medications such as lorazepam and imipramine, but without their reported side effects.
Strengthening the immune system
Ashwagandha increases the activity of natural killer cells (NK cells), which are essential for the defense against viruses and tumor cells. The liposomal form enables a direct effect where the body needs it most.
Anti-aging: Cell protection & rejuvenation
Ashwagandha supports telomerase, an enzyme that slows down cell ageing. The liposomal technology maximizes this anti-ageing effect by optimizing the absorption of active ingredients.
Increase in cognitive performance
Ashwagandha improves memory, concentration and mental clarity. In combination with Brahmi, it ensures maximum mental performance – ideal for high mental stress.
Ashwagandha and DHEA:
In addition to lowering cortisol levels, studies show that ashwagandha may also be associated with an increase in DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone). DHEA is considered a precursor of important hormones and acts as an antagonist of cortisol.
With increasing age – often from the age of 30 – DHEA levels fall, while cortisol rises. Research has linked this to reduced stress resistance, tiredness and fatigue. In older people, DHEA levels can be as low as 10-20% of the original level.
Some studies are also investigating possible links between low DHEA levels and long-term health factors. For example, animal studies show that DHEA could be associated with a lower tumor rate.
Research suggests that ashwagandha may play a role in supporting hormonal balance through its potential effect on cortisol and DHEA. However, further studies are needed to understand these relationships in more detail.
Heart health, endurance and hormonal balance
Studies suggest that ashwagandha can support various bodily functions. For example, there are indications that it could influence the breakdown of cholesterol in the liver and strengthen the heart. Observations show a possible improvement in the heart rate, contractility and ability of the heart to relax. In addition, a reduction in blood pressure and an increase in cardiorespiratory endurance have been observed in top athletes – without a direct hormonal effect, but through hormonal regulation.
Ashwagandha is particularly interesting in connection with hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. As an adaptogen, it could help the body to regulate metabolism, nerves, hormones and support the psyche and immune system. In one study, the thyroid levels TSH, T3 and T4 improved significantly after a daily intake of 600 mg ashwagandha root extract over eight weeks.
These results suggest that ashwagandha could play a regulatory role in various physiological processes. However, further research is needed to fully understand these relationships.
