The scientific name of ashwagandha is Withania somnifera, the plant is also known as sleeping berry, Indian ginseng or winter cherry. Originally from India, Africa and the Mediterranean region, it has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years. The name we are most familiar with – namely “ashwagandha” – means “smell of the horse”. There are several reasons for this: firstly, the root smell is quite intense, and secondly, it is an allusion to the power of animals, which is also meant in sexual terms. The legendary plant is said to increase not only desire and stamina, but even fertility. Some clinical studies have confirmed an increase in sperm count and testosterone levels.
