Christian Opitz tells
“Learning and remembering what I have learned has always been easy for me. When I deal with a topic, I experience it like an interesting 3D movie, with visual and auditory impressions. It can also be something that is dry in itself, such as biochemistry or physics. When I started giving lectures and seminars on health topics 30 years ago, I realized that many people find it difficult to remember information effectively. Particularly impressive and also sad in this context was the negative self-image and self-criticism that so many people very quickly find themselves in when they struggle to learn. I wondered whether it really is the case that some people have a good memory and others a bad one. I suspected that there must be something wrong with this simple explanation, because so many people who complained about their own memory performance when learning were, on the other hand, able to recall very detailed memories from their lives that involved particularly impressive experiences: hardly anyone forgets their first kiss, their first date with a loved one or the moment when they received terrible news – but remembering what is in a non-fiction book that you read just last week is much more difficult. So apparently memory is not inherently good or bad, but works well in some circumstances and not in others. So I asked myself the question: “What if people could learn to create circumstances in which their memory works well?” And so various experiments began, first with friends and later with people I was teaching about health. And lo and behold, many people who had previously considered themselves to be mediocre learners discovered to their own surprise how relaxed and enjoyable learning can be and how much better their memory actually is than they had ever suspected. This is how my method “Learning like a genius” was born in 1997. The name was intended to express the fact that ingenious learning abilities are inherent to everyone and are not the privilege of special talents. It is an exciting journey of discovery to explore the untapped potential of one’s own learning abilities. When it comes to learning, many people live in a cage of conditioning from their school days, when learning was often experienced as a dry, compulsory task. However, this conditioning has nothing to do with how learning can be experienced – if you simply use your brain in a natural way.”
