Origin and properties

Ionic lithium, derived from the Greek word “lithos” for “stone”, was first found in rocks. As a light metal, it does not occur in nature in elemental form due to its high reactivity, but its traces can be found in the form of salts in mineral waters, salt pans and seawater. Lithium plays an important role in our body, even though it only contains a few milligrams. It is stored in various organs and interacts with various neurotransmitters and important minerals such as sodium, potassium and magnesium.

Applications and history

Since the 19th century, lithium salts have been used in medicine for various purposes, from treating gout to helping with infectious diseases. Interestingly, it was not until the 20th century that research into the therapeutic effect of lithium salts on depression began. Today, lithium supplements are used both as drugs and as dietary supplements, with further research into their many uses and potential benefits.
