Description

Little fleas to perk you up?

Anyone wondering why psyllium husks are called psyllium husks – which is a really important question – should know that the plant has nothing to do with fleas. It’s actually quite simple: the small seeds of the Plantago ovata plant (Indian plantain) look like tiny fleas – at least with a little imagination. And they pop out of the pod easily, just like fleas.

However, psyllium seeds actually have much more in common with chia or linseed: like these two seeds, psyllium husks have a swelling property and provide fiber for a healthy diet and a happy gut. They can be used as an egg substitute in many recipes. They can absorb many times their own weight in water, giving them a gel-like consistency. Their swelling capacity is even higher than that of whole psyllium seeds.

But you don’t necessarily have to use psyllium husks as an ingredient, you can also consume them with enough water as an intestinal detox. And I emphasize it again: enough water. So lots of water! If you don’t pay attention to this, you’ll be in for a not-so-pleasant surprise: without enough water, they turn into a tough lump that feels like you’ve accidentally eaten a sponge. And it can even cause constipation. With enough liquid, however, they turn into a smooth, benevolent intestinal smoothie that makes you feel good and gives your body inner mobility. Some people have experienced a “bowel detox”, others report sudden sprints to the bathroom.

We summarize once again:

  • High fiber content:
Psyllium husks contain between 85.2 g and 90 g of fiber per 100 g, making them one of the most fiber-rich natural ingredients.
  • Digestive support: Due to their high fiber content, psyllium husks promote healthy digestion by increasing intestinal volume and supporting gentle regulation of intestinal activity.
  • Versatile in recipes: they are ideal for preparing porridge, yogurt, smoothies, bowls, muesli and for baking bread, rolls and other pasta.
  • Vegan egg substitute: Swelling in liquid produces a gelatinous mass that can be used as a binding agent in cakes, rolls or other baked goods as a substitute for egg.
  • Compatible with various liquids: Psyllium husks can swell in quark, yoghurt, milk or plant-based milk alternatives (e.g. oat, almond or soy milk).
  • Organic quality and practical packaging: psyllium husks are grown in controlled organic quality and you receive them in a practical value pack
  • Covering the daily fiber requirement: The German Nutrition Society (DGE) recommends a daily intake of 30 g of dietary fiber – psyllium husks can help to easily meet this requirement.
  • Promotes satiety: Due to their high swelling capacity, psyllium husks contribute to a long-lasting feeling of satiety, which makes them a popular ingredient in healthy eating plans.
