For example, 16 kilos of grain are used to produce one kilo of unhealthy and highly contaminated meat – not to mention all the water, methane and manure produced and the transportation around the world.
As a result of the market economy’s law of constant growth, pesticides, genetic modifications, monocultures and factory farming have become supposedly indispensable factors in food production, to which even the smallest farmers in the remotest corners of the world are subjected – the patenting of seeds makes it possible. So when we decide to buy a schnitzel or a steak in the supermarket here and now, one of the effects we are having is that somewhere in the world a child has to go to bed hungry because its daily ration of grain has been sold abroad, where it is used to feed pigs standing meters high on top of each other in cramped cages, their entire lives covered in a shower of faeces from the animals above them.
